Aging-In-Place ADU Residence

A retired couple will relocated to their son's family's home in the Parkside neighborhood of San Francisco. The space will be converted from a storage and laundry area to a one-bedroom home with a full bathroom and kitchen ideal for aging-in-place.

The couple's home needs to accommodate their many interests, including the art of Bonsai, Kumiko woodworking, their fishing and cycling gear, and entertaining friends. They requested a Japandi style and space for meditation.

Design Concept

Kokoro is a Japanese word that has no direct English translation, but is thought to mean: "Heart, mind, spirit"; the concept that feelings, thoughts and will, and knowledge and experience give a person their unique inner richness; the overlap of the emotional, mental, and spiritual states of all sentient beings; the state of being whole.
